Dilemma 46: Armenia and Military-Political Structures

by RCSP

In the next episode of the ‘Dilemma’ podcast dedicated to security issues, these questions are analyzed by Narek Galstyan, Candidate of Political Sciences and Associate Professor, Mikayel Zolyan, Candidate of Historical Sciences, Associate Professor, and Publicist, and Areg Kochinyan, Head of the Research Center on Security Policy.”

  • What logic guides the CSTO and NATO?
  • What significance does participation in a military-political alliance hold for a small state?
  • What has the CSTO represented for Armenia in the past, and how has that perception evolved?
  • Is Armenia capable of determining which side of the iron curtain it wishes to be?
  • Is it feasible to be a member of the CSTO while simultaneously embodying a democratic, rule-of-law state?
  • Ultimately, should Armenia consider withdrawing from the CSTO?

Narek Minasyan

“Withdrawing from the CSTO carries its own risks and benefits, which must be carefully evaluated, as they are intricately interconnected. There are economic and military aspects to consider, along with the geopolitical context.”

Mikayel Zolyan

“It is essential to recognize that in the case of Armenia, if we choose to remain within the CSTO, we may as well forget about democracy.”

Areg Kochinyan

“Regrettably, there is often more noise than action in our society on any given topic. The same can be said regarding the CSTO; our operational logic is characterized by more noise than actual deeds.”
