Dilemma 44: Mass Media and National Security

by RCSP

In the next episode of the “Dilemma” podcast dedicated to security issues, these questions are analyzed by Boris Navasardyan, President of the Yerevan Press Club, Andranik Shirinian, Representative of the International Human Rights Organization “Freedom House” in Armenia, and Areg Kochinyan, Head of the Research Center on Security Policy.

  • How are mass media related to national security?
  • What role does the media play in today’s Armenia?
  • How should a journalist navigate the frequently shifting political messages?
  • Freedom of speech and responsibility: how does the rapid rebuttal mechanism function?
  • Are Armenian mass media dependent on various political forces?
  • How can the crisis of trust between society, the government, and media representatives be overcome?

Andranik Shirinyan

“I believe one of the effective mechanisms is to take preventive measures against the ‘spread.’ There needs to be an internal awareness within the state that there should be institutions in place to prevent such narratives from spreading, rather than merely refuting them. Refutations do not spread at the same scale and speed as misinformation.”

Boris Navasardyan

If we approach this superficially, everything seems simple and clear. There should be a clear law on state secrets, a list of state secrets, and media outlets should operate in accordance with these.”

“…There is a principle to keep in mind. The primary responsibility for safeguarding state secrets, which is also tied to national security, lies with the holder of the secret, not with the potential disseminator.”

Areg Kochinyan

People should be accountable and responsible not only in critical situations. The world has changed, and now each of us essentially becomes a creator and disseminator of information. In this case, a bit more delicacy is required.”
