In recent times, Russia has responded positively and shown support for the demand from Baku and Ankara for the so-called “Zangezur Corridor,” to which Iran has thus far resisted at the level of official statements.
Areg Kochinyan provides the following assessment of these developments: “For Iran, the opening of a route from Azerbaijan to Nakhichevan through the territory of Armenia, under Russian, Turkish, Azerbaijani, or any other control, is unacceptable.”
According to his analysis, such developments would create two obstacles for Iran. First, it would weaken the unrestricted connection between Armenia and Iran, and second, it would become a serious tool for Azerbaijan and Turkey to bypass Iran’s interests.
When asked how Iran perceives the opening of a route under Armenian control, the political scientist notes that it is “not particularly beneficial” since it could become an alternative to the route passing through Iran.
