In his interview, Mr. Kochinyan commented on the Russian Foreign Minister’s statement that Armenia is undermining the agreement on transport connections through the Syunik Province. Mr. Kochinyan believes that the real obstacle to the Meghri corridor is the sheer impracticality of control mechanisms proposed by Russia. He views Putin’s visit to Baku in a broader political context, highlighting a new phase in the strengthening of partnership between Russia and Azerbaijan.
“Russia is changing its stance in the region by aligning with a new ally, Azerbaijan rather than Armenia. Azerbaijan’s appeal stems from its rich energy resources, logistical advantages, and closer alignment with the Russian political system and values compared to Armenia and Georgia. In addition, Armenia and Georgia have chosen the path towards Europe, while Azerbaijan has no such intentions.”
